Danish Design

Viewing the history of the chairs inside the Danish Design Museum
Chair
“… and this is a chair?”

As promised, we visited the Danish Design Museum and Josiah’s took is on the amazing history of the chair – which surprisingly has been heavily influenced by Danish designers. Not bad for a country of 5.5 million; less than all of Washington State.

Decribed as focused on functional simplicity, I have a whole new appreciation of the chair. How does one bend a piece of wood to be both the back and the arms? Can you make a chair from a single piece of wood or material? How can you make a beautiful piece of art that you can actually be comfortable to sit in as well?

Josiah took a whole class on furniture this semester and his final project was to build a collapsable chair from bamboo. His final year at Cal Poly includes a furniture design competitition and he has already thinking about a table to create.

We started the morning off at the zoo and a walk through what used to King Frederick VII’s gardens and castle. Now home to the Royal Danish Military Academy, whose recruits run by as we walk. The swans did not bite and the boats were out away for the winter. The large zoo was next door and a highlight was the panda and the two sets of baby elephants and their moms.

In the afternoon we visited iconic Nyhavn, with the brightly colored buildings which were the original merchant and trading houses in the early 1700’s. We took a boat tour which is a must for a city of canals, and then partook in the local faire. It got very chilly once the sun dropped down at 3:30, but the city is wonderfully lit up at night.

We finished the evening, after a restorative nap, at the local hangout, The Bastard Cafe, which would make my family jealous with its focus on games, over 2400 different games to choose, as you get something to eat and drink.

Tomorrow, we have planned for a slower pace, we will see how we do.
