Tapas and Sangria

Samara tries her hand at hardening the sugar on the dessert
Josiah is in charge of the olives and anchovies
Siri tries one out, not so excited about the anchovies, but the Sangria is very tasty
David is making the red sauce with the mortar and pestal
Bob, Josiah, and Siri are working cleaning the prawns – the ‘fun’ part is taking the heads off
put that prawn down now – don’t play with your food
Siri is not excited to see the prawns too close
We receive instructions from our chef, Noria, on how to make the Sangria
We got to work in a professional kitchen with everything ready for us to make
And we are still preparing more food and drink – cutting up the fruit for the Sangria
A family shot of the wanna be sous chefs
And finally sitting down to share the meal – always more fun when you have prepared it together
And the whole group after a fun evening together -met couples from Germany and New York

“Eat and drink like the locals,” is good advice and so we tried our hand out and learned how to make Sangria and Tapas one night in Barcelona. We all took our stations and cut and chopped, peeled and cooked our meal that evening. We started off by making the Sangria, a cold red wine and fruit mix. It seemed a key ingredient was more brandy. We added brandy into the pitchers of Sangria and to cook the prawns, and everything else.

We met two lovely couples, one from Germany, which during dinner we had a good conversation about the US electoral college system and how it didn’t seem to make sense, and with a couple from New York, one was a Washington Post investigative reporter who had worked on exposing the Opiod crisis. We were all good friends by the end of the evening.

The meal consisted of lots of small bites, Tapas, like cheese on tomato seasoned bread, a tomato and chili red paste on bread, olives and anchovies, potatoes, prawns, and more.

I don’t think even the 20,000 steps we have been doing each day will offset the constant “grazing” and drinking together we have been doing since we arrived. Samara even commented that eating and drinking does seem to be the national pastime. That and rooting for FC Barcelona. We are just working to fit in as a local.

We have recipes that we are supposed to be able to recreate back home, so I’m thinking there will be a Siri and David Tapas and Sangria night when we return. Sign up now.
