A Mountain of history

At the entrance to Fort Monjuïc
On top of the fort looking down on Barcelona
We all played the family games of clues in the fort – meant for 12 and under – just perfect for us
Josiah deciphered the clue to get to the photo inside which had to be put together
Bob looking over the harbor which the three kings and their flotilla arrived on the night before
Siri and Josiah checking for the cluesaround the fort
We did have to translate from Catalan into Spanish, which made it more interesting
Samara checks out the ramparts
We all got our Personalized Certificates after sort of completing the game
We took the newer gondola up – our actual one was built a bit safer than this one
Here was our view heading upas we passed the other Gondola – you can see Sagrada Familia, and our neighborhood, in the distance
We took the older gondola down to the waterfront, here we are passing the tower with great views of the harbor and the city
Under the sea at the aquarium
Last sunset with montjuïc in the background
Our last look at Sagrada Familia as we leave the metro and head home

Places can tell lots of unexpected stories. On our last day in Barcelona, we headed up to monjuïc, which is the high point next to the harbor. What was a surprise was that the old fort on top had a history dating back to the 900’s and was an important historical place for Barcelona, especially for Catalonia.

It was used several times when Catalonia expressed its desire for independence and many were killed in these battles. Most recently it is where Catalan’s first democratically elected President, Lluis Companys, raised the Catalan flag in 1936 and later then he was executed here by Franco in 1940, at the end of the Spanish Civil War.

It was finally given back to the people of Barcelona who have reclaimed it and placed a memorial to this fallen leader. On this same mountain is the 1992 Olympic Stadium which bears this President’s name. It wasn’t until 2011 that the same Catalan flag was placed back on this fort.

Now, the current leader of Catalan is in exile after they declared their independence in 2017, and many of this leadership is imprisoned and serving long sentences.

We enjoyed the views and the two separate tram rides. We saw the harbor where the Three Kings had arrived during with their flotillas the night before and checked out the places we had visited this past week.

We headed down to the beach and checked out their aquarium and a fun shark tank. After another full day of walking another 20,000 steps, we took our final photo at the beach and header back home on the metro for dinner. As we came up for the metro, the familiar site of Sagrada Familia greeted us.
