Day 24: Cascais, Portugal – beach town
Such was the advice given to me by the Lisbon muralist, Goncalomar1 (Check him out on Instagram) as we came upon him and his wife touching up his mural at the marina in Cascais, the Lisbon resort town just a 40 minute train ride away. This mural was his interpretation of the man of the sea, (which Siri and I had just seen a real life crew of fishermen 10 minutes earlier on a pier untangling their nets). He told me he wanted to remind us that we are all part of nature, that we are all connected. He followed this up by stating we should all travel more since it is how we get know each other better.
Around the corner was the mural, “We are all Tourists” – a reminder that we all, no matter country or border, are swimming in the same ocean.
We found out he has created murals around the world, including one on a barn in Morro Bay, California. Sounds like a future treasure hunt.

Today was off to the beaches of nearby Cascais, with train service every 15 minutes, which tells you its popularity. It is supposedly one of the first resort towns in Europe – and it shows on a sunny weekend. The beaches are full by the afternoon, but still not packed as if it was summer. We enjoy a relaxing day seeing the sights and the activities – like Brazilian foot volleyball in the sand, the commotion of launching 100 boats off two piers for the morning races – only one capsized and he looked rather embarrassed in front of his friends, and windsurfers in the afternoon. A great long boardwalk that makes us think we could have almost biked the whole way out.
Our time in Lisbon and our trip is starting to come to a close and we find this is a nice transition to slow down once more before heading home.
