Sunrise on the Mekong

Day 21:  Chiang Saen to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

We arise to a beautiful last morning in Chiang Saen on the Mekong River
Our view into Laos from our balcony
Morning boat traffic is just starting – can see a few single fishermen casting their nets near the other bank
On the terrace a group has prepared a row of individual treats on table – we weren’t sure what what is was …
… Until the three monks arrived and they participated in their daily offering/alms giving at sunrise.  At the end the monks chanted a prayer of thanks to everyone.
Another temple complex over 700 years old contained within the walls of the old city of Chiang Saen – very similar in style to the one we started with in the ancient capital of Sukhothai.
And our second temple “skywalk” – this one with a sweeping view of the river valley.  We are thinking this will be the next upgrade to more temples to encourage visitors.
Some of the cheesy photo ops
The old temple with a stupa built on the rock in back and a Buddha ruin that they chose to not refurbish, but build a new temple around.  We also liked the rainbow street welcoming us in
Stopped at a bubbling hot spring that is 10 feet away from the highway.  Nice to soak our feet in a different area where they had cooked it down a bit into a lazy river.
A typical view during our 75O mile road trip up north this past week – beautiful open countryside and mountains.  In between the temples, the viewpoints, the border stories, caves, waterfalls, meeting hill tribe members, Chinese tea ceremonies, opium history, daily offering to monks and more … And thanks for following along with us …
After a full week of traveling, we stop to enjoy some different yummy food at ‘Hummus’ – like we said, Chiang Mai is quite the foodie place.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving week and celebration.

We know we have many things to be thankful for, especially our friends and family.
