Checking out the local scene

Day 24: Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

Remember that park with the yoga, martial arts and Sepak Takraw?  We decided to try out free yoga in the park this morning.  We had a good walk through the old city to get there by 8 am and already there was a crowd.  We paid our $1 to use the public mats and settled in – with more than 50 of our new best friends – mainly foreigners, but the instructor was a Thai local.  An hour and a half later we felt great, refreshed, and with a renewed commitment to start our yoga practice ourselves.

We are halfway through our Thailand adventure and we are starting to feel the rhythm of the place and notice a bit more on each walk. For example, it has become one of our daily routines to walk though this fairly small temple – with 700 year old ruins – that is just down the street.  Sort of a good way to settle into the day or to relax after being out.  Yesterday, we noticed there is a foreign guy who actually brushes the cats at the temple.  Who knew?

Last night, we checked out the local jazz scene.  When we arrived at the North Gate Jazz Co-op a bit early and were shuffled up to an incredibly small room on the 4th floor (with half of it being the bar).  Treated to an amazing guitar player who was using every inch of the guitar, even as a percussion instrument, and picking notes all along the neck of the guitar.  As people left halfway through, we finalize realized he was only the opening act. The full band was on the 1st floor and it was packed.  We stayed for a few songs – they have a way to go still – at least this band did.  A wonderful night out on the town.  As Siri said after – it felt like we went out on a date. πŸ™‚ Hopefully, we will have a few more dates on this trip.

Yoga in the park
We stop by the local expat hangout – the U.N. Irish Pub – because of the many nationalities that frequent it and I have a decent IPA – couldn’t quite go for the Guinness. After looking closer it was not the un-irish pub as we first thought.
The opening act at the jazz club – amazing guitar skills
The North Gate Jazz Co-op – overflow onto the sidewalk – and (it seemed) most important, three bar locations.
We try out another cooking school – look out we may actually try this back at home.
At the market – check out the cat sharing the table with the food
Our cooking school grounds – half hour outside of Chaing Mai
And even more Siri locations – this one looks fairly upscale – may have to try it out next time.
