Day 25: Last night in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand
We just got back from helping shut down a street by swing dancing.
Well, we had help from a talented 12-piece jazz band – complete with a full brass section – and the 50 or so people who saw the post that this was the first night of the annual Chiang Mai Street Jazz festival. They also combined it with the Chiang Mai Swing dance dance team – really, who knew?
So, once they squeezed into a place on the sidewalk and backed into the coffee bar, we started dancing. Many of the standards like “In the Mood” and then at the end they had a dixie congo line to “Oh, When the Saints Come Marching In.” Siri and I danced on the edges, but we still got the paparazzi treatment with everyone nearby videotaping our every turn. You might see us on some viral video in the future. The band leader, Paul, even came out and serenaded us with his sax as we kept on dancing. It was quite the scene.
We still had a few cars and scooters trying to make their way through. “We didn’t ask the police for permission,” Paul says, so the dancers and audience move to the edges and keep the beat going. At one point, we had a line on each side and we celebrated the scooters going by just like we used to do at our kids soccer games.
It was all laughter, smiles, and good music.
