We say goodbye to Zydeco

Breaux Bridge, Louisiana to Lafayette, Louisiana

A nice final ride, back through the countryside, along tree lined country roads, past the horse pastures and then back into the city.  We finished up at the empanada guy and some homemade jambalaya.   We both think we may have actually gained weight even after biking. 40+ miles per day for the last four days.

Today, we were assisted by our new friend Bill from Colarado (who is in much better shape) who helped pull us through the strong winds on the straightaways.  Made our best average time the whole trip with about the same effort.  His wife had to leave early, so he was on his single bike instead of the tandem.

It has been a great trip all around.  It showed us that we can do these long multi-day rides on our tandem and still get up the next day to ride some more.  We can also dance a while even after finishing.  Most importantly it showed us there is a whole biking family out there that enjoys seeing different parts of the country.  We enjoyed that these rides are really well organized to showcase the local communities.

We could see coming back to this one with a group of friends and family.  The rides are flat, the music and food is excellent, and there are lots of smiling volunteers who love showing off southern Louisiana hospitality.  Still don’t think we are up for the camping experience yet – especially that two of the four nights it was thunder and lightning with torrential downpours.

Fortunately, all the riding time was clear skies and not too hot until the late afternoon.  Our Gore-tex was great insurance and stayed in our bags the whole trip.

Now we rest a bit and get ready for our next part of the trip –  Family and friends in Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky and then end up at the wedding in Virginia.

Off we go!

And we finished!
