Guardians of the Seed

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay, Maine

Roskva is as wide as the trunk of the tree

Ever since finding our first Thomas Dambo troll in the forest while we visited our son in Copenhagen, we have been on a quest to find more.

We found a few hiding south of Louisville several weeks ago, and now we found five more in southern Maine.  After driving through a torrential downpour to get there, the rain stops magically, allowing us to enjoy our leisurely walk in the woods as we search for the hidden trolls.

Each troll has a story.  These are “Guardians of the Seed” and mimic tree trunks, flowers, roots, branches, and leaves. The first one mimics a tall and wide trunk, the second has long arms that root into the ground.  Each has a Scandinavian name and story.  All encourage you to explore and protect our natural lands.

We watch kids, of all ages – many older than us even – smiling at the joy of each find. Per Dambo, “The project becomes an open-ended fuse that initiates wonder,” inspiring people to see the natural world through a whimsically different lens.

Each troll has a name and a personal story
Lilja, like the flowers, each year would spring
Birk is for the roots
Søren, like branches, waves in the wind
We enjoy the detail of their faces and hands
Gro is like the leaves, breathing life with her lungs.
We continue our journey through the woods and enjoy some of the rhodendrons blooming here since we will miss ours in Seatttle
A beautiful walk through the gardens and ponds
