Falling for you

Seneca Falls, Ithaca Falls, Taughannock State Lake and Lechworth State Park

Over the last few days, we have been searching out the best waterfalls in New York.  Whereas Niagara Falls gets all the media attention, I would suggest that the finger lakes and up state New York has some other well-deserving ones as well.  Letchworth Falls, the so-called “Grand canyon of the East,”  took some time to get there and was recently rated as the #1 State Park in the country.

Van Cleef Lake – the former site of the Seneca Falls.  The falls, or rapids really, were flooded – as well as hundreds of homes and businesses, to put in the canal system

Sunrise in Senaca Falls on the canal though town – site of the former rapids and homes
Taughannock Falls that flows into Cayuga Lake
Taughannock Falls from the rim trail
Impressive Ithaca Falls at the end of Cayuga Lake
One of the many falls in the middle of Cornell University – a nice walk up and down their rim trail
Letchworth State Park – upper falls
Middle falls – for perspective, see the gentleman in white to the right of the falls

  1. Nice that you got to see Jerylin’s home base geography in Ithaca, NY. Unfortunately, she’s back in Belmont working for the summer, otherwise she could have given you a firsthand tour to show you that “Ithaca is gorges.” 🙂 But I think you figured that out. Grete and I did the same investigation in and around Ithaca, including Taughannock Falls, Cayuga Lake, and even Lodi, NY nearby when we dropped Jerylin off for her freshman year last fall. The weather in August was amazing. I’m not sure it stayed that way all year for Jerylin, but it showed off well for us. I’d kind of like to go back. It reminds me of the area in Germany we were just hiking this weekend with several of Grete’s German friends.
