The Maui Adventure Begins (Feb 23 – Seattle to Maui)

Maui is our first adventure of 2026 to go see the annual Humpback Whale migration. We also plan to see what being a (very part-time) local might look like and take in some of the more typical touristy things as well. First up is walking on the beach, then snorkeling, followed up by biking with our friends, the Browns, who have joined us for the first week, and then a trip up to Haleakala for sunset. This weekend we begin the real fun – participating in the annual Humpback Whale counting census as citizen scientist/volunteers. We will keep you posted on how we do!

We make it to Maui and first thing is to head to the beach!
One of the main purposes of the trip is to see the Humpback whale migration and calving that takes place each Jan-March in Maui – over 11,000 whales make it here annually. (OK, this is just a representation of a whale – not the real thing)
We meet up with the Browns and head to the beach for snorkeling
Then it is off to the local farmer’s market – check out the signs Siri is looking at the “Maui Local Avocados” and she is avoiding the “Not so local avocado” box next to it. After much discussion they even found passion fruit (!) for us.
The owners obviously enjoy fun labels like “Far Far Away Oranges” – “Local Longan” and my favorite “Hawaiian Invisible Fruit” – quite the steal at only $1.99 each
Our home for the next 2+ weeks in Kihei – the 1st floor condo with the blue towel in front (with Haleakela in the distance) – Thanks to our friends Kevin and Kim who rent their beautiful condo right on the beach.
We get to enjoy meals on the patio…
… and get to use the grills each evening to make dinner – YUM!

  1. I was in Cabo back the final weekend of January and counted many humpback whales there. I mean, if you’re looking for another place to count whales. And that was even before I started counting margaritas.
