Maui is our first adventure of 2026 to go see the annual Humpback Whale migration. We also plan to see what being a (very part-time) local might look like and take in some of the more typical touristy things as well. First up is walking on the beach, then snorkeling, followed up by biking with our friends, the Browns, who have joined us for the first week, and then a trip up to Haleakala for sunset. This weekend we begin the real fun – participating in the annual Humpback Whale counting census as citizen scientist/volunteers. We will keep you posted on how we do!

I was in Cabo back the final weekend of January and counted many humpback whales there. I mean, if you’re looking for another place to count whales. And that was even before I started counting margaritas.
Enjoy Maui! —jay
