Blessings in disguise

Tuesday, April 14, 2026 – Barbados to Seattle

Getting up early to see a gorgeous sunrise

Spending time with college friends

Traveling with my love, and best friend, Siri

Just a few of the blessings from this trip.

We knew it was going to be a long travelling day.  We had an eight hour layover planned in Miami.  We were not looking forward to it.  So, when our first flight leaving Barbados was delayed 30 minutes, then an hour, then unknown, and finally three hours later we left – we actually weren’t that upset.  We just spent that time in the Barbados airport rather than Miami.

We tell this story to our seatmate, who was a kind Jamaican now living in Barbados, she immediately smiles and tells us, “Oh, THAT is a blessing in diguise.”

And she was right.

We didn’t miss our connection, it actually broke the trip up better, and we weren’t stressed because we knew we had lots of time.  Even our college friends, who had a five hour layover planned, still had plenty of time to get their flight.

Probably a great reminder for me to look for those blessings, like creating a gratitude list.  So let’s keep listing…

Having enough time to enjoy one last margarita and fish tacos with our friends who we care about and don’t see often enough.

Getting a text from our daughter, who has graciously been watching the dog, wondering if I want to go to a concert with her when we return.

Getting a text from our son, who is also travelling today, telling us that he is still planning to wait for us at the airport and will drive us home.

Mobility – we still can walk through the expansive Miami airport – we almost made our 10,000 steps just through immigration and customs.

Talking about immigration – Global entry allowed us to barely pause as we walked past the officers who greeted us by name – which he called out ‘Siri’ it made the other officer’s iphone ask what he needed.  Everyone laughed a little.

Good memories of these past three weeks away – reunions with peace corps host family,  adventuring around Grenada, and enjoying learning about Barbados.

On the learning side of things – Siri mentions reading Minchner’s ‘Caribbean’ historical fiction book and she talks about the Bucanneers (French) and the Privateers (English), but really just a lot of Pirates of the Caribbean … oh, so THAT is what the Disney ride and movie is about. πŸ™‚  Got a good laugh about finally putting it all together.

Enjoying the fresh juices – especially passion fruit – and the coconut pies.

Staying connected to family via the weekly phone call, no matter where in the world any of us are –

Coming home – excited to see family, friends and our dog Yoda.

Thanks for joining us on this Caribbean adventure
