We say goodbye to Khutzeymateen Lodge

May 27, 2026 Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary to Prince Rupert

Khutzeymateen Lodge – new one built last year.  The old one had been here for over 10 years prior.  A lodge of somekind has been here for over 30 years.  Very nice accommodations.  Amazing that it it is towed in and out each season
Morning kayak
This was our main boat for the week to hold 10 of us and all the camera equipment too
Each morning we put on our Mustang survival suits which were great for the boat ride and pelting rain
Showing our latest fashions with our friend Tracy
Kept us warm and cozy
So we could enjoy the scenery
Back at the lodge we had spectacular views all week
And inside we had amazing food created by an accomplished chef – this is the freshly caught Spring (Chinook) salmon
The lodge is actually a series of three different floats attached to a floating dock – we never touched any land all week
In the back of the lodge is the water purification system, the sewage treatment plant, the many barrels of oil for the boats and their shop
This is the electrical room, their updated solar panels provide all the electricity needed
There was a nice wood fired sauna that we mainly used to dry our clothes after the wetter days
Inside is a large open room for everyone
Each morning we bundled up to find grizzlies – we found several each time we went out
We tried out eating the sedge grass which is their main diet – a bit fibrous.  Hard to believe the bears have to eat 60-80 lbs each day.  We did not try out the clams and mussels that is their other main food sources.
We were able to get very close to the bears – most of the guests had very large camera lenses
And the bears were soo amazing every time we went out
There was one daily tour boat that would join us for a short time.  We appreciated that we had several hours each days to view the bears.  We were part of one of two companies that have a permit that allows us to enter the estuary in our small boat.
We stopped in at the ranger station that is staffed by first nation rangers
We meet Norm who has been a ranger for a couple decades, next to him is one of our boat drivers who was previously a ranger for eight years.
We found bears inside the ranger station too!
A typical view of bears from the boat
Resting on the dock after a day out viewing
Beautfiul views every day
And we say goodbye
